I have been crocheting and observing crochet for a good part of 50 years now. I conclude that the requirement of “stitch to twist” is very much of an importance to crochet.
As an experimental crocheter (never wanted to follow a pattern) for its entirety. I have made sewing thread crochet to felted crochet. The need for the correct size of hook was sooo necessary to achieve the effective stitch.
In thread crochet it requires such a small hook to achieve balance of “stitch to twist” ratio. Too big of a hook makes the stitches look wimpy that opposite is true for too small of a hook, too compressed and the stitch definition is gone.
Crochet is known for the speed it can accomplish an item. The bigger the hook the quicker it is finished. Stitch definition is secondary, durability of the finished piece is compromised.
I challenge you to take one of your crochet patterns/designs you have just made and look closer at it. Does it have a good ratio of “stitch to twist”? Could it have been made better with a smaller hook but by keeping the finished product similar dimensions? Yes, I know that makes the pattern incorrect however would it look better?
Are you just crocheting for the speed of making things?
