Do frames make the art or art make the frame?

As I have started having my work become more wall art type, framing them has started to challenge the bottom line.

I had been making the pieces and then finding frames or having them framed. Framing Fiber-art has its challenges because shadow boxes can be too deep. Regular framing with glass squishes the art. Framing without glass looks (to me) unfinished and canvas seems to float ( might use this option).

I have started to look for frames that have depth and character. In doing this however, I now lean to creating my fiber art around the frame. This is not a problem and also helps direct my designing to a finished product.

In this new journey, I have found that undrilled cabinet doors to be of good weight and size.

The below pieces are all done on cabinet doors.
